GE Talks Resume Amid Warned Strike Hampering War Effort
Negotiators in the General Electric labor dispute resume hard bargaining after a White House panel warned a strike would seriously hinder the Viet Nam war effort. McNamara and other officials said a walkout would jeopardize engines, radar gear, and other military hardware. The IUE represents about 80,000 of 120,000 GE workers at 160 plants. GE offers a three year deal with 4 percent first year raises and cost of living increases, while the union seeks larger raises and stronger grievance procedures. Nine of the last 11 Kentucky Derby winners were stabled at Hialeah before Louisville.
