Bankrupt Arkansas firm blamed for collapse of PL&I
John Haley, chair of the state Board of Correction, blamed the bankruptcy of Arkansas Loan & Thrift Corp for the collapse of Peoples Loan & Investment Co. AL&T of Van Buren was placed in receivership last spring and declared insolvent last month with liabilities over assets by more than 2 million dollars. PL&I of Fort Smith is bankrupt but not insolvent and is barred from doing business. Haley tied PL&I’s collapse to Jones and other Democrats, noting investors paid 1 million dollars in fall 1965 under assurances from Dick Simpson and Clint Jones that affairs were in order. He criticized regulators for allowing the deal and said a run by depositors precipitated the receivership.
