Hempstead County Courthouse Plan Move Tied to PWA Funds

Hempstead county moved to build a new courthouse and jail with a PWA grant of 90000 and a private bond balance of 110000. The county hoped to move the court from Washington to Hope, facing a late 1938 PWA contract deadline and a near miss on federal aid. The plan drew scrutiny over special election timing and constitutional limits.
