In England near the end of 1944 Army nurse Rosa Lee from Springs North Carolina writes of long convoy days, makeshift hospitals, and hands on duty from sewing uniforms to caring for wounded. She notes camaraderie with American officers, limited socialding, and a life of rationed comforts, Christmas carols, and a sense of belonging in the Army.
In Greenwich Village the Music Box Canteen offers free refreshments entertainment and recreation for merchant sailors on leave. Mrs Frances Stern chairs the board stating it is the first such canteen in the country to open its doors to merchant seamen serving on Allied ships during wartime.
