Arkansas Highway Dept Seeks funds to modernize roads
The Arkansas Highway Department told Governor McMath that more than 142 million dollars are needed to modernize the primary road system. About 49 million would upgrade interstates 61 64 65 67 and 70 while 93 million would rebuild other primary roads to meet standards. The plan also calls for 25 million to reconstruct the interstate critical sections and 34 million to close gaps and cultivate sections. An extra one cent per gallon gasoline tax could raise 3 million annually, or two cents would roughly match the current bond program. If possible, the interstate would be rebuilt to federal standards and highways 67 and 22 would be upgraded to relieve heavy traffic.
