Arkansas Baptist convention rejects university merger plan
In Little Rock on November 22 the Arkansas Baptist state convention defeated by voice vote a proposal to merge Ouachita and Central Colleges to form a Baptist University in Little Rock. It also rejected converting Central College Conway into a coeducational institute under Ouachita's administration. The body approved Texas Baptists’ ban on degrees for drinkers or gamblers and expressed opposition to peacetime military training linked to liquor and immorality. A 1946 budget of 364,146 was adopted, the largest in the denomination’s history, and the 1846 session was set for Texarkana. Trustees urged profits from the Baptist State Hospital to fund better care and charity.
