Expert on beans and forestry at Farm City Week lunch
Dr. Richard Porterfield, Ohio native and University of Arkansas at Monticello forestry assistant professor, spoke to Kiwanis about soybean versus forestry. He noted Arkansas lost over 18 million acres of forest from 1959 to 1969, a 12 percent statewide decline, with a 39 percent drop in the delta due to soybean expansion. He said soybean profits average 16 dollars per acre vs timber at 10, and that returns from intensified forestry occur only after 20 to 40 years.
