Democrats consider suspending party rules in Arkansas primaries
Charles D. Matthews, chair of Arkansas Democratic Party, urged freezing rules that bar or limit who can run or vote in Democratic primaries if they did not back Democratic nominees in 1968. He asked the party’s general counsel James Blair to study the rules and possibly suspend them until next year’s state convention. Matthews warned the rules may violate due process clauses and could deter qualified voters including those who supported George Wallace last year.
