Hope’s First Scout Troop Formed in 1911 by Ethridge
In 1911 a Hope youth, F R Ethridge, organized the first Boy Scout Troop here and became its Scoutmaster. While working at Carl Beer-Bill Bethea Lumber Co, he secured culled lumber to build a hut on city land behind the Tom Boyett home. About 30 boys formed five patrols, each with a leader, and bought their own uniforms and 50 cent handbooks. They hiked to Red Bluff, Red Lake, and Dyke Springs for campouts, with N T Jewel assisting. Ethridge, still a Hope resident, presented his original commission to Olen Overturf to preserve for future Scouts. The commission, dated July 25, 1911, lists William H Taft as honorary president and Theodore Roosevelt as honorary vice president. It will be framed for display at the Lion’s Cub Scout Hut in Fair Park.
