Humble Oil and Refining Co officials report an explosion on a oil rig 27 miles south of Grand Isle Louisiana injuring 14. The West Delta Block 730 platform was struck as storms disrupted radio contact delaying details on the injured and the incident.

George Brown, the son of a truck driver, rose to deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Britain and entered the House of Lords as Baron George Brown of Jevington after the June Labor defeat. Brown was created a life peer following the party's loss.
Near settlement of the eight week General Motors strike and easing interest rates hint at an economy upturn. The new GM contract raises wages about 20 percent over three years, while a railroads panel recommends 32.5 percent boosts. A prime rate cut to 7 percent and a two day discount rate reduction to 5 percent bolster business spending, but wage gains risk inflation and higher unemployment. Steel shipments could rise by over a million tons if the steel strike ends promptly.
