Attlee Warns Civilization Depends on Christian Brotherhood
Prime Minister Clement Attlee told a joint session of Congress that civilization can survive the atomic bomb only if nations embrace the Christian principle of mankind's brotherhood. He warned moral progress has lagged behind material advances and urged international and national life to reflect shared humanity. He also met with President Truman and Canadian PM MacKenzie to discuss making the world safe with new atomic energy.

White House tight lipped over Truman Attlee King talks
The White House refused to comment on the conference among President Truman Prime Minister Attlee and Canadian leader King. Hassett said the president is honor bound not to discuss talks in advance while British officials indicate progress and a communique could be issued soon. The dispute centers on outlawing the atomic bomb with Attlee wary that wartime agreements would be scrapped if war resumes.

Prayerful Bronx boy eyes final Virgin Mary night
Joseph Vitolo, nine, of the Bronx, has prayed for 14 nights at an improvised altar in a vacant lot. Crowds of 4000 gathered as he sought a miraculous sign before the Virgin Mary. A fainting woman and a soldier seeking blessing were among those drawn to the scene. The boy could not say what the final night will bring.
