Moscow AP reports Luna 17, an unmanned Soviet lunar probe, launched Tuesday and en route to the moon with an aim to scoop lunar soil and return to Earth. Tass says onboard systems function normally as it nears the surface, continuing Russia's automated moon exploration program.
A cold front will cross Arkansas before Thursday morning but temperatures fall only slightly. The National Weather Service notes air from the west rather than Canada, increasing cloudiness with a few showers in the northeast. Officials of Canner of Eastern Arkansas Inc announced a 1.7 million plant in West Memphis to supply soft drinks to distributors in Arkansas Mississippi and Tennessee. A general construction contract was awarded to James H Taylor & Sons Construction Co. of Crawfordsville. The plant will employ about 55 people and is expected to start operation in six months.
Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird will ask the Senate for 20 million dollars to fund riot control training and protective gear for National Guardsmen and Reservists. The move aims to reduce injuries and curb firearm use, following Kent State, and would supplement the House passed military appropriations bill with gear like masks, vests, and riot control devices.
MFA Mutual Insurance Co. asked Arkansas state Insurance Commission for an average five percent rise in auto rates with 6.8 percent liability, 12.5 percent uninsured motorist, 1.4 percent collision and 1.7 percent comprehensive increases. MFA insures 89,400 in Arkansas and would gain about 396,300 yearly in premiums if approved.
