Public Notice on firearm classifications and registration rules
Government notice defines weapon types including machine guns destructive devices and related terms. It specifies which firearms must be registered and outlines lengths and configurations that trigger registration requirements. It covers shotguns rifles and combination weapons and clarifies inclusion of frames, receivers, and assembled parts in weapon definitions.
Firearm Registration Notice for November 1968 Deadline
The notice requires possession of certain firearms to be registered with the Director, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Division, IRS, Washington. Registration must be completed by December 2, 1968 using Form 49467, in duplicate, obtainable from the IRS office. Unregistered firearms of the covered type are unlawful with penalties including fines up to 10,000 dollars and up to 10 years in prison. Civil penalties or forfeiture may apply. The law protects submissions within 30 days from criminal use, but false information remains prosecutable. Antique firearms and certain devices are excluded or differently defined as described.
