A cold front moved through Arkansas bringing very light scattered rain and high clouds. The front ushers in a blast of colder air expected to arrive tonight. Some lingering cloudiness accompanies the frontal passage and a few sprinkles were observed.
Weather forecast notes tonight lows upper 20s north upper 30s south highs mainly in 60s with a warming trend through Sunday a cold front Sunday may not bring rain. Also lists subscription and mailing rates for Hope Star with carrier and mail options and a college student bargain offer.
Two people died in an early morning blaze at a night watchman's house on Airline Drive in Benton. Fire Chief Joel Anderson said the victims, a man and his wife in their 60s or 70s, were found in different rooms with the woman described as an invalid. No names were released. Witnesses heard no explosion, and firefighters found the home engulfed upon arrival.
The measure carried in Tyronza town sup covering Earle and Norvell by 447 to 38 while Washburn township opposed 80 to 135. Menifee approved the measure with 70 for and 51 against.
County by county figures accompany state totals for Arkansas election on Tuesday. President Ford Carter Governor Pryor Griffith First and Second Congress votes with party splits. amendments and acts show Yes/No tallies across precincts.
Voters approved a constitutional revision framework paving the way for a convention. Legislation set procedures to select delegates and fund the convention, with any proposed constitution needing voter approval in a future election. The 1874 charter has been amended 57 times. Gov Pryor pushed reform as his top priority and helped pass a 1975 bill to convene 35 delegates.
The race yielded a razor thin victory for Carter as analyses show broad Catholic and age group support, while Ford led only among 45 to 54 voters. Advisors expect a rapid start to Carter's White House tenure and a push to streamline the executive branch.
Infant Jason Paul Smith died in a local hospital. Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Corinth cemetery. Talbot Feild died at 96 in Texarkana with services at 2 p.m. Thursday in East Memorial Chapel and burial at State Line Cemetery. Ernest C. Duffer Sr. died at 85 in a Texarkana nursing home with funeral at East Memorial chapel and burial in Chapelwood cemetery.
With 431 of 435 House races decided Democrats maintain a 2 to 1 majority, narrowing to 290-145 and possibly 291-144. Reps Mikva and Meeds lead, while Meeds may await absentee results. Abuse scandals and misconduct allegations surface among several incumbents as the party preserves its edge.
Mona Lynn Rowe of Hope joins 33 Ouachita Baptist University juniors and seniors in the Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities edition. She is a junior secondary education major and serves as EEE club secretary and member of the Student Foundation, SNA, and Quachi-Tones. They also note community events including a Union Singers talent program at St Luke Baptist Church and an Audubon Society meeting at Millwood with potluck meals.
Jimmy Carter of Georgia carried Arkansas over Ford while incumbent David Pryor won a second term as governor against Leon Griffith. Bill Alexander, Wilbur Mills successor, won the 1st District seat and Jim Guy Tucker captured the 2nd District post as Mills retires. Voters approved constitutional changes including Act 1177, Amendment 56 raising pay for officials, and Amendment 57 allowing property tax adjustments for tangibles.
Carter and Pryor led in Box 4B while Williamson trailed with 111 votes. Box 4A gave Murphy 200 and Williamson 9 percent, with Murphy earning 14 absentee votes. Lester Wade won Justice of the Peace No. 8 with 596 votes over William D. Feathers. Alderman Ward 1, Position 1 Robert Pryor defeated Irene Tollette 49 to ?. Thurston Hulsey beat Eunice R. Long for Ward 1, Position 2 with 53 to 40. Ward 2 saw “Dub” Pinegar top Barbara Jones 57 to 36.
The Agriculture Department reports Halloween progress show corn 77 percent harvested soybeans 73 percent and cotton about one third complete. Midwest Corn Belt harvesting advanced rapidly but trails last year’s pace slightly while soybean harvesting runs ahead of last year. The report notes transportation and storage facilities were strained as corn gains momentum.
