Registration of Negroes Up Sharply
Registration of Negroes rose sharply in the South and likely nationwide, with the Justice Department noting growth from 487 000 to 1 016 800 in five Southern states between 1965 and 1966. Civil rights drives and federal registrars under the Voting Rights Act of 1965 contributed to the increase, potentially influencing major election contests.
