The Associated Press notes showers and thunderstorms to spread across Arkafishs tonight with precipitation chances from 60 percent in the northwest to 80 percent elsewhere. A 90 percent chance is forecast today in the northwest as the precipitation is expected to diminish from the northwest Saturday.
Weather outlook for Arkansas shows a northwest low moving southeast across the state bringing rain and cooler air. Locally heavy showers possible, with highs near 80 in the north and mid 80s south, and overnight lows mostly in the 60s. Rainfall amounts listed for Pine Bluff, Fayetteville, Harrison, Jonesboro, Little Rock, and Fort Smith.
One set of keys found at Bois D Arc Lake may be claimed at the Hope Star office on 8 Walnut St by identification. Kirk James was promoted to Lt Col at his base in The Netherlands and news reached his Ardmore and Hope relatives. Washington AP Rep Les Aspin introduced a bill to bar the military from using dogs in any chemical or biological weapon experiments. He cited reports that the Army planned beagle tests and alleged a quashing of fears with a figure of 450 dogs to be used.
Residents of Massena New York voted to take over the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp utility after 74 years. Final unofficial results showed 3636 in favor and 2178 against about 63 to 37 percent. Officials say the move could cut costs with a 20 percent rate reduction, funded by a $4.5 million bond.
Obituary notices for Francis Tucker and Welch Kelley report multiple survivors and service details. Additional notices cover Dearl Brewer of Nashville and a regional diving medal tally noting U S dominance since 1920, with Micki King highlighted in Munich.
Jack Hill, regional consultant, met with Hope officials and Red River Tech volunteers to review the DWI Driver's Re-Education program. Mrs. Robin Moore reported 255 students completed the course for first offenders in eight months with six repeaters, a recidivism rate just over two percent. Fifteen persons were referred to the Drinker Driver program for two or more DWI arrests in one year, four of whom violated probation and had it revoked. Hill discussed a potential halfway house in Hope with Ed Hartsfield and Horace Anthony.

Applicants must take the G A T B Aptitude Test at the school June 13 at 8 30 a m. There is an increasing need for trained LPNs in the area and there are not enough qualified nurses. Receipts estimated at 580 cattle, down from 675 last week. Slaughter cows mostly 1.00-2.00 lower, feeder steers 2.00-3.00 lower, feeder heifers 3.00-4.00 lower. Supply largely choice with some good feeder cattle. 15 percent cows. Cow-calf pairs offered at 280.00-360.00 per pair.
Green Bay Packers middle linebacker Ray Nitschke resigns to pursue acting. He will portray a prison guard in the Burt Reynolds led film The Longest Yard. The move shifts him from football to entertainment with UPI reporting the cast change.
