Graham Hill and Art Pollard also failed to finish as fuel switch and lubrication questions sparked debate over the fuel used. Feud Over Engines Still Rages After Indy Win

James R. Polk reports from Indianapolis that the lingering feud over turbine engines persists after Bobby Unser’s victory in the 1968 Indianapolis 500. Unser, who won as Joe Leonard’s jet turbine failed in the final nine laps, argues turbines should race separately while opponents push for a ban at the upcoming USAC Rules Committee meeting. Unser led 127 of 200 laps and questioned the turbines’ full-speed use, noting gear issues and Leonard’s late challenge. The controversy continues to split racers, owners, and fans, with several rookies turning heads among the field.
