Delegates at the 39th Southern Presbyterian general assembly in Montreal step toward adjournment on Wednesday. A plan for an assembly-wide evangelistic advance beginning Oct 2 and running 15 months was approved, with cooperation from related evangelical efforts. Dr H H Thompson outlined the program, while Dr Harrison Ray Anderson urged reunion with the northern church. The assembly also voted to accept Roman Catholics as members on confession of faith, and to recognize Catholic baptisms as valid.
Little Rock May 30 The Arkansas Supreme Court ruled labor added to an article’s value cannot be deducted from the gross receipts tax. The decision affirmed a Pulaski chancery decree in Ferguson Monument Works v Cook. The ruling held labor included in sale price is taxable as part of total consideration.
Hamburg May 31. A prominent South Arkansas couple died in a private plane crash near Portland Ark shortly after takeoff for Little Rock. Victims were Henry Naff 54 bank official and plantation owner and his wife. Plane hit a tree in fog while attempting an emergency landing. Survived by son Leroy Naff Lake Village and daughter Mrs L D Pugh Partland.
Heavy rains hit Arkansas on Monday night and Tuesday with the heaviest 24 hour total of 2.20 inches at Hot Springs. Camden Pine Bluff Nimrod Dam and Little Rock area reported over an inch. The Arkansas river fell while the Ouachita rose with a forecast crest near flood stage at Arkadelphia and Camden around June 5.
The White House advised that President Truman will arrive in Little Rock at 3 p m on June 10 to attend the American Legion annual reunion and will stay at the Hotel Marion. He will appear at a M M Ebberts Post ball and a major parade led by Major General Ralph E. Truman, with the war memorial park dedication at Arkansas War Memorial Stadium following the parade. The visit includes a public dedication and a security plan for a large procession. Secretary Louis Johnson will accompany the President.
