Hope Faces Budget Gap Despite Growth in Population

Hope's 25 percent population rise over ten years coincides with higher city expenses. City Finance Chairman Syd McMath notes operating income around $20,000 annually and expenses near $59,000, producing a $39,000 deficit. The municipal water and light plant covers much of the shortfall and provides free services such as school and church power, while owning $625,000 in property including the city hall and fire stations. McMath highlights benefits of municipal ownership and outlines budget recommendations, including a $100,000 reserve and a $3,600 street-age appropriation.
