Unity and memory mark Gettysburg Memorial Day service

Representatives of the North and South gathered on the Gettysburg battlefield for a Memorial Day service during the 36th governors conference. Governor Edward Martin of Pennsylvania called it the most important ceremony on that field since Lincoln dedicated the national cemetery, as Governor J Melville Broughton of North Carolina spoke for the South about shared reverence for the fallen.

Revolt in Guayaquil topples Ecuadorian government leaders

Dr Carlos Arroyo Del Rio resigned as Ecuadorian president under revolutionary pressure as troops in Guayaquil seized control after a ten hour battle that left several dead and hundreds wounded. Velasco Ibarra’s supporters and the Alianza Democratica backed the move to halt elections and invite his return from exile. A provisional junta took charge in Guayaquil and calm returned.
