National Guardsmen and volunteers fought to save 2000 acres of farmland at Petit-Jean Mountain south of Morrilton. Sandbags raised the levee crest as repairs continued to stem breaches threatening Highway 9 and surrounding cropland amid rising water.
Edwin L. McDonald of Little Rock urged pastors to be shepherds who love their flock and sacrifice for them. He warned against opportunists who move from country pulpits to city churches. The Southern Baptist Pastors Conference gathered from 40 sites for the four day annual meeting.
In Eprpstead County Arkansas the court issues a formal order involving plaintiff Valentine and defendant Dorothy Valentine. Clerk Byers signs the document dated May 14, with the court seal.

An Arkansas man, K M Townsend, 26, a Citronelle air worker and Lawson resident, was captured in El Dorado on a rape charge involving a 12 year old girl in Citronelle Alabama. He was arraigned before Union Circuit Judge Claude Love on fleeing from justice. Bond set at 2000 dollars. The girl said Townsend attacked her May 21 at her brother's house near Townsend, and he warned her to stay silent.
