Community Fire Prevention Effort Pays in Arkansas County

The Eudeaa community in Nevada County received the Keep Arkansas Green Association award for its Rural Community Fire Prevention program. Since 1952 timberland burns dropped from 60 percent of 70 square miles to under 1 percent by 1935, driven by four volunteer fire units with wardens, aided by County Extension Service and State Forestry Commission. In 1955 two fire control demonstrations trained crews, including FFA students led by Ed Spencer, who fought four fires that burned under four acres. The program also planted 25,000 pine seedlings and improved timber stands with many farmers and 4-H members, advancing timber as a key local crop.
