WPA Faces Cuts as Congress Reviews Relief Spending
Washington reports that WPA will be targeted by the House Appropriations subcommittee as hearings begin on the agency’s size and scope. Proponents warn of a drastic funding reduction while noting current WPA employment of about 1.52 million, split between defense and non defense projects, with a proposed next year budget around 75 million dollars aiming at roughly 1.2 million jobs a month. Regional cuts already hit defenseless areas like Ravenna Ohio and Radford Virginia while defense contracts concentrate in a minority of states.
