Purder Case Ends As Defense Portrays Wife’s Bravery
In Cedar Rapids May 27 the defense urged that the 23 year old St. Louis pediatrician Dr Robert C. Ruttledge Jr. acted to protect his wife and was provoked by the alleged seduction of Mrs Sydney Ruttledge by Byron Hathan Hartmann. Defense attorney R S Milner portrayed Mrs Hartmann as a gallant woman trying to save her husband as the jury of five men and four women prepared to deliberate on charges of murder stemming from a hotel room confrontation last December that left Hartmann mortally stabbed. The attorney argued Hartmann’s death resulted from a chain of events following sexual betrayal and threats. The defendant had faced the courtroom with his wife taking the stand as a brave witness in a highly charged case.

Big Four May Not Get Much Done Fools May 1947
French observers said the Big Four foreign ministers conference may yield only a renewed trade accord between East and West Germany. Soviet Foreign Minister Vishinsky rejected any plan for a united Germany under Bonn and warned against joining with Western zones. The backdrop included court testimony about Dr. Rutledge and Hallman’s case, with jurists outlining possible verdicts from first degree murder to acquittal as the trial unfolded. More than $7 million in motor vehicles were registered in the United States on January 1, 1947.
