Amendments Shape Way of New Min Wage Bill

The House debates amendments as it moves toward passage of a bill to raise the federal minimum wage and broaden coverage to 7.2 million workers including farm, hotel, hospital and restaurant staff. A top-rate delay to 1970 is planned while initial raises reach $1.40 next Feb 1 and $1.60 later. Bipartisan support exists for core goals, though some oppose expanding coverage and argue higher wages could hurt small businesses. President Johnson backs the bill but seeks changes in the law.

FBI listened to Baker on telephone

The Justice Department says FBI agents secretly tapped a hotel room line between Fred B. Black Jr. and his attorney in 1963 two months before the grand jury and indictment. Solicitor General Thurgood Marshall asks the Supreme Court to hear Black’s tax case a second time, noting the listening device did not affect the trial’s fairness but that Black is entitled to a judicial determination.
