Evacuation Plans Underway After Arctic Research Station Escape
Caped from the Arctic Ocean, the Navy paid the University of Alaska to run the station and began evacuation planning. Arlis II drifted south in the east Greenland current at over 19 miles daily. The final 20 scientists and camp staff departed last week. Investigators from the Naval Ocean Office Suitland, California US Geological Survey, and universities of Southern California Wisconsin Washington and Hokkaido contributed data. Much of the science adds to knowledge with potential use in submarine navigation.
