In Washington the third ranking U S Army general in Korea Maj Gen John K Singlaub flies to the White House after publicly opposing President Carter’s phased four to five year withdrawal plan for U S ground forces in Korea. He says he would execute policy, unchanged, and would apologize for the disturbance. Separately, local arrests include Frank Selders III charged with burglary and theft, Bill Ray Henley for forgery, Ralph E Buckley 17 charged with possession of marijuana with intent, and a reported theft of a safe from Southwest Frozen Foods Company.
The AP reports a sharp rise in April consumer prices with food up eight tenths of a percent led by a 13.1 percent jump in ground coffee. Overall inflation for the year is 3.2 percent with food and energy excluded showing a six-tenths of a percent rise. The Carter administration expects inflation to ease later in the year though price levels remain high.
The Hope Advertising and Tourist Promotion Commission reviews the Old Washington art portfolio underwrite plan. Only 500 copies exist numbered for sale in Hope at a June 4 pre showing with prices 2 25 for copies 2 through 25 and 12 50 for copies 26 through 499. Numbers 1 and 500 will be auctioned later. After Hope the display moves to Little Rock at Territorial Restoration.
Kevin C. Robbins, 23, of Bonduel Wisconsin, died after a safety ladder gave way and sent him 33 feet to the ground at the Hudson feed mill on North Main Street. He worked for Hough Brothers Construction Company and died at the scene. Survived by parents, a brother and two sisters. Funeral plans pending.
The 50th anniversary tribute recalls Charles Lindbergh's solo flight from Roosevelt Field to Paris. Events span St. Louis to Washington and Paris with replicas displayed, memorials in New York, a Kennedy airport christening, film broadcasts, and a Smithsonian celebration honoring the aviator and his impact on aviation history.
Rep. Lester L. Wolff says Nixon’s secret plan to provide up to 5 billion dollars in postwar reconstruction aid to North Vietnam is an historical document, null and void, a view echoed by Nixon and President Carter. Declassified papers show Nixon’s 1973 letter promised about 3.5 billion in reconstruction aid plus 1 to 1.5 billion in other forms, with Congress required for US action.
Country singer Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys will appear Friday May 27 at the Fair Park coliseum in Hope. The show runs 7 to 9 p.m. with dancing 9 to 11 p.m. Tickets cost 4 in advance. Thompson and his Blaze Boys dominated country charts from 1948 to 1961 with top rankings in Cashbox and Billboard.
