Bevin warns war of nerves as danger of war rises

British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin told a Labor conference that the real danger of a future world war lies in Russia’s war of nerves. He opposed aggressive action against the Soviet Union and urged diplomacy, Berlin stay, and a peace conference among wartime Allies. He noted Britain may seek a new loan from the United States to aid European recovery and warned against allowing Communists to seize power in Western Europe. Bevin described Western European defense talks as necessary for survival and urged adherence to normal diplomatic channels. The remarks referenced the Stalin Wallace peace letter and the need for lawful avenues rather than appeals to publics of allied nations. The piece also recalls the history of the baseball commissioner post and a comment about Saint Anne as patron saint of glovers.

Senate Race Draft Compromise Fails in Congress

Washington May 19 Senate Republicans failed to craft a compromise on the draft bill amid a dispute over racial provisions. Senator Russell of Georgia argued against a plan requiring service regardless of race, while GOP leaders consider a substitute by Senator Lodge to resolve the dispute. The draft bill would revive selective service for men 19 to 25 for two years, with a reserve option for 16 to 18 year olds. House Rules Committee hearings on a separate draft proposal proceed with registration for ages 18 to 30 and a two year service obligation.
