Russell Group Votes to Oversee CIA By Senate Panel
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a 14 to 5 measure to give Congress a role in supervising CIA operations. Chairman Richard Russell denounced the move, warning it could squander CIA secrecy while supporters led by Senator J. Fulbright push for more oversight. The plan faces a tough path through the Senate Rules Committee and potential clashes with Russell, who leads the Armed Services panel and argues against congressional intrusion into CIA affairs. Other members on the subcommittee include Senators Stennis Hayden Symington Smith and Yourg.
