Can Plant Sorghum in Place of Corn in Hempstead County

Hempstead County farmers who missed the first corn planting date may substitute grain sorghum for part of their corn acreage, says county agent Oliver L. Adams. Sorghum tolerates later planting and summer drought better. land prep and fertilization follow corn practices. Recommended fertilizer is 200–300 pounds of 4-12-4 or 5-10-5 per acre before planting, plus 50–75 pounds ammonium nitrate side dressing. Planting rate depends on use: grain sorghum in hills 12–18 inches apart in rows about 42 inches. 3–4 plants per hill, 4–6 pounds seed per acre. For hay or silage, seed 8–10 pounds per acre, solid row. Varieties include Sorgrain, Hegaria, Graham, Kafir, Milo. some newer combine/dwarf types show promise but not broadly recommended yet. Some suggested for blending include Plainsman, Caprock, Martin’s Combine, Midl, and Bonita. All sorghum should receive New Improved Ceresan to control smut.
