17 year cicadas swarm in southwest Arkansas
Cal Caldwell, county extension agent, explains the periodical cicada or 17 year locust is actually a 13 year variety in Arkansas. The insects emerge in large numbers, do not feed on foliage, but lay eggs in twigs and later die. If they stay on schedule, another batch would appear next year in Eastern Arkansas, last seen in 1960.
