Chinese officials warn of soon war between U S and Soviet Union

Fire kills two small children in Arkansas farmhouse

Two young children died when a fire engulfed a farm house on State Highway 131 in Seyppel Arkansas. The victims were not yet identified by the Crittenden County sheriff's office and were believed trapped inside when the blaze began around 7 30 a m.

Carter signs $24 billion stimulus and public works bills

President Carter signed a $20 billion economic stimulus package and a $4 billion public works measure after a Rose Garden ceremony with mayors and lawmakers watching. Business Council sees economy on sound growth path through 1978

The Business Council forecast the U.S. economy will stay on a sound growth path into 1978 with real GDP up about 4.9 percent this year and 4.4 percent in early 1978. Unemployment should fall toward 6.5 percent by mid-1978 while inflation eases in the first half of 1978. Corporate profits rise about 11 percent and nonresidential investment costs rise 11.8 percent.

Man charged in shooting fracas

Harmon Evans of Texarkana faces charges filed Thursday including reckless driving carrying a prohibited weapon and aggravated assault. Hope police pursued Evans at over 100 mph along Interstate 30 and arrested him near the weight station. Prosecuting attorney Jim Gunter said he is held in county jail.
