Farmer Dies After Dinner Bell Injury Near Smackover
Wiley R. Swilley aged 64 a Union county farmer died in a hospital after a dinner bell fell on him while he repaired the bell at his home three miles west of Smackover. He collapsed as the platform gave way and the bell struck his head. Funeral services planned at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Swilley’s Chapel Methodist Church with Rev J W Johnston officiating. Burial in Hicks cemetery near Smackover. He leaves a wife six sons and five daughters including Wharton Swilley El Dorado Austin Lecompte Ernest Longview Jack Henderson Buster W R Smackover and daughters Vivien Hammon Aline Reuter Lois Jones Elva Slaughter Ruby Gulley. He was a lifelong member of Swilley’s Chapel Church.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission announces a May 16 opening for squirrel shooting through May 16, with a general season from June 15 to October 1. The open season for squirrels resumes October 1 to January. The supreme court invalidated special county laws, so the general law applies. The artificial bait ban ends May 15. fishing rules permit taking most game fish with artificial bait, a 15 crappie or bass bag, six trout, and no size limit on other species. Trout under 12 inches must be released.

Kidnaped Cow Returned for Groceries
In Menard Texas a prize cow owned by George Stangel bank cashier was taken for ransom. A note instructed Stangel to leave $10 worth of groceries in the cemetery, where he would be told the cow’s location. He followed the directions and found further messages guiding the recovery.
