Texas and SMU Placed on Probation by Southwest Conference

In Dallas officials from Texas and Southern Methodist pledged to comply after the Southwest Conference imposed probation for recruiting violations. SMU received two years of NCAA activity suspension including bowl games though conference title eligibility remains. Texas received indefinite probation with potential removal within a year and was barred from post season times. Coaches and presidents commented on compliance and corrective steps.

Faubus Criticized Over Municipal Issues and Tax Powers

North Little Rock resident Faubus faced criticism for not discussing municipal problems in his announcement. Glenn Zimmerman of the Municipal League echoed discontent in a letter to Faubus. Faubus cited state turnback funds rising from 3,538,035 in 1955 to 8,112,090 in 1963 and pledged support for a constitutional amendment to increase city taxing powers, slated for the upcoming general election ballot in November.

Weather continued with mild conditions across Arkansas and Missouri through Tuesday. Low tonight 55 to 60 in northwest, 60s elsewhere. highs 70s to mid 80s. Southeast and northeast Arkansas see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms, highs 76 to 84, lows 60s. Missouri zones mostly cloudy with thundershowers, highs upper 70s to mid 80s, lows upper 50s to mid 60s. Louisiana mainly partly cloudy with scattered thundershowers north, drier south, no major temp changes. highs in 80s, lows 60s to 70s.

Arkansan Sets SWC Track Record at Lubbock Meet

John Deardorff of Arkansas won the three mile run in 14 49 4, a new event record, at the Southwest Conference meet in Lubbock. Arkansas also had James Bane take the high jump 6 4 and Dick Perry win the broad jump 24 54 // Arkansas placed fifth varsity and fourth freshman. Rice won the meet with 61 points.

May Stop Buses to Baseball Games

The Cleveland Transit System threatens to end its special buses for baseball fans unless the Cleveland Indians continue underwriting the program. CTS GM Donald C. Hyde says he may incur out of pocket costs and cannot have regular riders pay. Indians GM Gabe Paul says he knows of no other city where baseball management funds such bus service. Also noted are various track results with Arkana mention and relay times.
