Week end auto deaths in Arkansas rise on highways

Thirteen people died on Arkansas roads over the weekend in a mix of motorcycle and pedestrian incidents, with several single vehicle crashes and a high rate of non collision fatalities. Notable cases include four month old Jay C. Sutton in a three vehicle crash near Smackover and a Hot Springs area fatal on U S 270.

Showers and storms end from the west tonight, with partly cloudy skies Tuesday and continuing mild conditions. Highs today and Tuesday expected mainly in the upper 70s, lows in the 50s.

Postal Rates Rise Sunday

Washington AP reports that unless blocked by a federal judge, the upcoming postal rate hike will raise postcard postage to six cents and letters to eight cents, with air mail at eleven cents. Second and third class and some fourth class rates will rise 10 to 20 percent, along with special delivery and registered mail costs. May 16 boost hinges on Postal Rate Commission review, while a lawsuit led by magazines and newspapers seeks to halt changes until commission action. Arkansas Supreme Court Extends Workmen Comp Jurisdiction

The Arkansas Supreme Court ruled the Workmen's Compensation Commission has extraterritorial jurisdiction for injuries occurring off Arkansas soil if the employee was hired in Arkansas. Carl J. Tidwell of Hot Springs was awarded compensation from International Paper Co. for aggravated arterial condition while working in Texas. Chief Justice Harris dissented. Justice Byrd dissented on the jurisdiction ruling.

Washburn Brother of Editor Dies in Florida

Charles William Washburn aged 65, retired Metropolitan Life regional manager, died of a heart attack at his Sarasota home. He had 40 years with the company and was among America's top salesmen. Monks and nun self immolate in Viet Nam peace protest

A Buddhist nun and a 27 year old monk set themselves on fire in Vietnam on Buddha's birthday as a call for peace and withdrawal of U.S. troops. The nun died at a pagoda in Cam Lo near the DMZ. Chon The burned himself in Hue after leaving letters to Nixon and Thieu. Both belonged to the Quang Buddhist sect. Investigations were under way as to whether this signals a broader political act.
