Power of Press? Decline of New York journalism signals danger
In troubled times the press erodes first among democratic institutions. The World JournalTris collapse after 296 days reflects economic shifts to Long Island and suburbs, with rival papers consolidating. Political actions, labor laws, and court protections shape press freedom amid the decline.

Bombs Kept From Hanoi Months in Effort to Open Peace Talks

Hanoi did not accept the de escalation offer, and the episode ended with a temporary Hanoi bombing restraint. Publisher Admits He Created CIA Subsidy Program
Thomas W. Braden, publisher of the Oceanside Blade-Tribune and former CIA official, says he created a CIA funded program subsidizing student, labor and cultural groups abroad. He details $50,000 in CIA money used by the UAW to influence European unions and says the money supported educational and organizing activities. Reuther says UAW once agreed to use funds for European unions and later would not transmit government funds. The CIA would not comment. Braden headed the CIA division of international organizations in 1953-54 and asserts the program infiltrated Communist fronts.
