Weather continued from page one reports storms this afternoon with some locally severe activity. Partly cloudy and cooler tonight through Tuesday with highs mainly in the upper 70s to mid 80s and lows from the 30s to 60s. Arkansas faces scattered thunderstorms and cooler conditions tonight, Louisiana sees showers and thundershowers, Missouri notes cloudiness with possible severe storms and cooler conditions by Tuesday.
Water broke through windows and walls as a flood swept Harrison area. A service station building was buried a block and a half from the square, a casket warehouse wall collapsed, and heavy metal caskets were thrown into a field. The Kennedy administration seeks Congress approval of civil rights legislation to desegregate all racially segregated public schools. Every school board with such schools must adopt a desegregation plan within six months and file it with the secretary of welfare. The package, tied to the 1960 Democratic platform, would require first‑step compliance by 1963 64 and provide federal help and court enforcement as needed.
Tape parade faded amid clamor in other cities to honor the space pioneer. Carrying out the back to work emphasis, Shepard will hurry back to space training after his tram spent five to six hours in the capital. He and six fellow astronauts, with him in Washington to share acclaim, go to Langley Air Force Base in southwestern Virginia later today.
