The canal would place Philadelphia in direct competition with New York and save a day and a half in reaching the port.
Philadelphia reports the Pennsylvania railroad opened the fastest merchandise freight flyer between Boston and Philadelphia. The Boston to Philadelphia Speed Witch trains set a new speed record, reflecting the railroad’s policy of naming its crack freight trains.
