No Change on Segregation Says Wallace
Governor George C. Wallace refused to alter his segregationist stance despite concerns about Negro voters shifting to his wife's Republican opponent in November. He stated no deals with any voter group and anticipated winning the general election without relying on the Black vote. James D. Martin, the GOP hopeful, said he would seek support from voters who share his platform, not depend on a bloc. Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. noted Negro bloc voting could matter but called it too early to say.
