The Associated Press reports a dry weekend for Arkansans with cool, cloudy skies and no rain expected Saturday. Partly cloudy conditions and cooler temperatures are forecast with a 20 to 40 percent chance of thunderstorms today. Showers are expected to return to the state by Tuesday.
Weather outlook for southeast Arkansas with temperatures in the 80s today and 70s tomorrow. Overnight lows listed for Pine Bluff, El Dorado, Texarkana, Fayetteville, Harrison, Jonesboro, Memphis, Little Rock and Fort Smith. Eighteen cars of a northbound Cotton Belt freight train derailed inside Fisher city limits about 30 miles south of Jonesboro Officials said two cars containing methyl bromide and one containing berate were in the wreck Methy bromide a chemical and benzene a petroleum derivative are flammable The derailed cars posed a hazardous spill risk and rescue crews worked to contain the scene
The Securities and Exchange Commission charged Penn Central Co and two former officers with schemes to inflate earnings and hide losses to mask the railroad’s financial plight. The suit, filed in Philadelphia federal court, also accuses officers of diverting 4 million to private accounts in Liechtenstein and alleges sales of 15 000 shares while aware of the crisis. The case names Saunders and Bevan plus four others and seeks refunds of profits.

A federal four year test on 6 768 youths from 1966 to 1970 finds 4.8 percent illiterate, about 1 million of 22.7 million students in grades 6 to 12 cannot read fourth grade material. Illiteracy highest among low income black males. gaps widen with parental education and income. Dr Ruth Love Holloway calls findings alarming and discouraging. A separate note compares Aztec Tenochtitlan population in 1519 to London under Henry VII.
Federal State Livestock Market News reports Thursday receipts 701, up from 332 last week. Slaughter cows 0.7 percent lower at 1.50, slaughter bulls 3.00 to 4.00 lower, feeder steers and heifers unevenly down 1.00 to 5.00. Supply mixed with good to high numbers of 300-550 lb feeder cattle. Replacement cows in firm range, cow calf pairs offered 200 to 400 per pair.
