U S authorities filed a $38 159 income tax lien against Charles Gargotta and his widow Marie for 1945 to 1947 with a $27 778 97 assessment plus a $9 781 22 lien for 1948. An additional $5 932 lien was filed against Mrs Gargotta for 1946 and 1947. Gargotta and Charles Binaggio were killed in gangland style at the first ward Democrat club rooms on Truman Road in April.
The Florida primary spotlighted a clash between civil rights factions. Sen Clifford Pepper lost to Rep George Smathers as Smathers led throughout the count, winning Dade by 5 percent. Starzer testified under oath that Western Union has 17 racing news distributors not supplied by Continental. McFarland said they will press Western Union to provide the names of individuals connected to every leased wire that carries racing information, aiming to uncover the complete network.
Senator McCarthy accused John Lattimore of being a Soviet spy, citing Budenz who testified that Lattimore belonged to a party cell. Lattimore dismissed Budenz as a liar and called the charges a product of malice, adding a sharp counterattack against McCarthy. He also claimed there are about 5,700,000 Huey supporters in the United States.
May 3 11 peace talks in the Chrysler strike advanced slowly with no progress on day 99. Mediators ordered a restart as Chrysler and CIO United Auto Workers traded accusations of bad faith and haggling. About 89 000 strikers remain to be recalled as 140 000 auto workers idle amid stalled settlement efforts. Herman L. Weckler and Walter Reuther clashed publicly over blame despite ongoing negotiations.
Chicago May 3 The national railway mediation board chairman said he is investigating reports of a strike threat by railroad yardmasters. Reports from Kansas City say yardmen in seven midwestern centers planned a three day protest starting tomorrow at 4 a.m. Eastern. Francis A. ONeill Jr, board chairman, has no official notice and cannot confirm. Milton Schoch, president of the Railway Yardmasters of America, declined to discuss or reveal membership. The 1950 World Almanac lists membership at 3600.

Grew former U S ambassador to Japan said conditions there favor the Communist cause as Japan stands at a crossroads between democracy and a path toward communism and totalitarianism He cited currency inflation pot shortages trade collapse housing needs and social disorganization as factors shaping Japanese youth toward the left He warned there is a chance to reverse the trend if the public remains receptive and the average mindset remains malleable
Bank of Blevins Hempstead County Arkansas presents its list of assets and liabilities as of April 24 1950 including loans on real estate U S securities pledged and not pledged other bonds and securities furniture and fixtures cash and due from banks state warrants and government deposits total deposits and paid in capital and surplus. Directors and cashier P C Stephens attest the figures as true to the best of knowledge and belief with sworn acknowledgment dated April 29 1950 and commission validity through June 1954.
Harold E. Stassen labeled President Truman the worst president and the cleverest politician to hold the White House. He criticized Truman’s West tour as a political venture and accused him of pursuing a puppet congress. Stassen, head of the University of Pennsylvania and former Minnesota governor, cited the Pendragnast school of Kansas City as his source.
Washington May 3 The house ways and means committee voted to cut the tax on economy cigarettes from seven to 4.9 cents a pack. The action would push total excise taxes below the 1.065 billion mark, far above President Truman's proposed limit. Treasury estimates show smokers would pay about 90 million dollars less in a year. The panel plans further reductions, with final decisions heading to the house and then the Senate for approval.
Palm Springs Calif May 3 Singer Al Jolson dismissed reports he is dead noting humor in Hollywood about Bing Crosby and death rumors. Jolson turns 64 on May 26 and jokes that such reports are a sign of rising fame, while a separate note mentions Truman speech and Republican calls to address the 1950 situation.
A bus and a truck collided and burned near Ashland killing three people. Five passengers escaped with cuts and burns, later two bodies recovered from wreckage include Edgar A. Snyier of Columbus and a woman identified as Norma Hellner. Sheriff M F Rickenbrod reported the Cleveland to Columbus Greyhound bus driver perished.
Hong Kong reports Gen W. H. Gordon arrived with 735 evacuees from Red China including 186 Americans. The group also includes 79 British 21 French and 377 stateless persons. The American President Liner Left Taku Bar last Saturday bringing out U S consular personnel. Walter Mc Conaughy formerly Shanghai consul general heads the group.
