Answers to Mail Orders From JACK STINNETT
Washington Answering the Army mail orders the reason there are no Company Js in the army is that originally the letter J looked rich like the letter F Y that army officials were afraid orders to the company might become confused. Incidentally there is no J street in Washington. Mes K M D Phoenix Ariz says it would be fun to write a story about this being the first army with no Indian scouts but General Headquarters says we do have Indian scouts with the 25th Infantry at Fort Huachuca Ariz. May be it is beside the point but the army considers Indians the most competent and efficient communications men in the whole draft army. PR Camp Ord Calif I can only tell you what an old army may tell me. Whenever I was reviewing troops I looked at the leather. If a man s shoes belt purses and cap visor of feather, tool were polished, I figured he knew what soldiering was all about. He did add that the same applied to all polishable metal, but he never saw a man with metal equipment up a gloss who didn t have his leather looking the same way. These men who put elbow grease in their polishing invariably gave the best performance under fire. E. W Albany N Y The estimated strength of the army in mid April was 1,186,000 men. About 68,500 were conditioned officers. The regular army accounts for about a half million officers and enlisted men, National Guard about 290,000, draftees about 380,000. Mrs. T. P. Austin Tex I be glad to pass along your observation. (Continued on Page Three)
