Hope property bill delayed by council in Arkansas
Arkansas Legislative Council delayed a bill allowing state takeover of unclaimed property in banks, utilities, and corporations. The plan would expand the 1949 act to seize seven year unclaimed funds, aiming to preserve idle property for state use with an estimated $250,000 yearly revenue, amid council friction with tax policy and revenue officials.

Larey explained to the council on Wednesday that state and federal constitutional questions affect levying the sales tax. Nationally chartered banks have never paid the tax but state chartered banks did before a 1967 bill. Harvey learned in January some states tax federal banks and courts sanctioned this, prompting Larey to consider taxing the state bank once allowed.
