Little Rock May 1 The Employment Security Division announced that not all veterans will be eligible for readjustment allowances when school terms end. State administrator Pumfoy Gill said no veteran is eligible for allowances for any period already receiving a subsistence from the government. He noted possible refunds for duplicated payments and warned of criminal penalties for fraudulent claims. The program targets veterans unable to find civilian work and requiring availability for work at all times.
Postmaster Robert M. Wilson announced a War Department change effective May 1 1947 removing the need for a written soldier request to mail parcels to overseas APOs and eliminating the weekly limit. Parcels up to 79 pounds and 100 inches combined may be mailed as often as desired without a request while eight ounce airmail weight limit remains unchanged.

Senate Banking Committee rejects across the board rise while Senators Wagner and Taylor warn of danger in no workable extension before control law expires.
The navy identified the cremated bodies of three sailors killed when a speeding car hit a parked truck and burned. Victims were Joan Ray Gregory of Drakesboro Kentucky, Charles H. Gallihugh of Brandy Virginia, and Dudley Fontenot of Kinder Louisiana, all stationed at Millington Tennessee. Identification used dental charts since remains were unrecognizable.
