Belgium Acid Plant Ruined by Explosion Near Pessendale

A chemical plant in the northern Belgian industrial district near Pessenderloo was destroyed in an explosion. German radio claimed 250 killed and 1,000 injured, with the plant producing fertilizer and washings. Free Belgium News Agency disputed this, saying it produced acids for explosives. Sabotage by the White Brigade is noted, with seven members sentenced to death a week earlier.

Ouachita College Announces May Homecoming Week

Ouachita College will observe homecoming May 23 to 25 with senior day events, a baccalaureate sermon by Rev. Washington reports the Ways and Means Committee, chaired by Doughton of North Carolina, moved to a new corporation tax program aimed at raising three billion dollars. Red River Surges to 33 Feet Prompting Flood Fears

Red River rose about 14 percent overnight to 33 feet, swelled further by Friday night. Frond stage at Fulton reaches 24 feet. Plane collision inquiry continues over seven Army fliers

An Army board of inquiry in Orlando, Florida, probes a mid air collision that killed seven Army airmen. Pvt. William Eugene Wimp Holland of Missouri, formerly from Jonesborough, Arkansas, one of six aboard a bomber attached to MacDill Field, died in the crash along with the pursuing crew from Orlando. Wreckage fell into an orange grove. the bomber occupants were cremated and no bodies recovered. Wimp had taught school in Maynard, Arkansas, and lived with his brother in Jonesboro.

Shreveport Man Dies Near Mineral Springs

Stuart 25 of Shreveport died early Thursday morning at a local hospital. Funeral services were held at the County Line church west of Mineral Springs Friday afternoon. He is survived by his widow and infant child, his mother and father Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Stuart of Mineral Springs, two brothers and four sisters.

Decision on Sales Tax Favors State in Arkansas Case

Pulaski County Chancery Judge Dodge Friday upheld the Revenue Department’s right to collect a 2 percent state sales tax from three Arkansas industries on electric power and natural gas consumption. A total of $118,304 has been paid into court registry since 1935 to guarantee payment if the levy is ultimately due.
