Law out of date ends gambling charge in truck case
Thirteen men charged with shooting dice in a truck won freedom yesterday as the city gambling law was deemed outdated. They faced counts of being inmates or keepers of a gambling house, but their attorney cited the 1874 law defining gambling houses as buildings booths yards gardens boats or floats, noting trucks were not included. Rates Review Sways Through Arkansas Gas Firms
Two firms reply from the page and face court actions by several industrial customers. Industrial tariffs show Arkansas Western Gas may seek rate increases with minimums of 15 cents at Clarksville and 16 cents at Fayetteville Harrison and coal regions, while contracts show 20 cents or more. Only one Sept 1 1950 contract with University of Arkansas carries 15 cents. Thompson says rate reviews are staff not Commission actions, requiring formal filing, hearings, and orders for any upward changes. He aims to keep gas affordable for Arkansas households, noting Fort Smith Gas Co is largely Stephens Production Co gas supplier under a 4 year 1954 contract. Thompson’s background spans PSC attorney roles and posts under McMath Gentry Fauburn Faubur.
