Biologists Assemble Live Virus In California Lab
In Pasadena California two biologists Dr Robert Edgar and Dr William Wood of the California Institute of Technology report they have assembled a live virus more complex than any artificial form built before. The T4 virus resembles a hypodermic syringe and is 1 100000 inch long it cannot reproduce without its host bacteria. It injects DNA into bacteria and uses the host cell to manufacture more of itself.

Scientists report engineered viruses that assemble from parts
Edgar and Wood describe creating about 100 virus genes with heat and chemicals to inactivate certain genes. Host cells then produce unassembled parts, which recombine in tests to form complete, reproducing viruses. The work appears in Caltech's Engineering and Science magazine.
