McQuinn and Scarsella Vie for Reds First Base Job

In a Tampa camp report on the Cincinnati Reds, George Hartley McQuinn and Leslie George Scarsella contend for the first base spot. McQuinn, a former Yankee farmhand, faced competition from Scarsella, a 22 year old from California who hit .358 in the Piedmont League last season and led the league in stolen bases. The piece notes Dressen’s mix of veterans and sophomores, the need for hitting, and the Reds’ progress from eighth to sixth in 1935 with an aggressive, faster play style. It highlights McQuinn’s history and Scarsella’s speed and power potential as crucial battles shaping the Reds’ 1936 lineup.
