Dale Bumpers backed by the Senate approved spending above his recommendation with a 28-2 vote for a $63,616 increase in the 1971-72 Dental Health Bureau budget and 27-1 for a $1.5 million municipal aid hike. Bumpers had urged keeping aid at $1.2 million and warned against piecemeal funds harming construction. The committee also approved a $500,000 contingency fund for colleges for two years and a $50 per semester tuition rise.

Arkansas cigarette tax raised five cents per pack

LITTLE ROCK AP The cost of cigarettes in the state increased five cents a package this week when Act 328 of 1971 which raised the tax on cigarettes became law. Cigarettes now cost from 43 to 50 cents a package depending on where they are purchased.
