Origins of Wall Street Name Traced to Dutch Wall
In 1642 the Dutch built a public meeting house at 73 Pearl Street and in 1653 they erected a protective wall around their settlement. The wall gave rise to the popular name Wall Street, later adopted by the financial district of New York City.
